Tour Overview

Imagine standing on Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, the first rays of sunrise turning the glaciers golden while the vast plains of Africa fade into the horizon below. That unforgettable moment is what this 7-day Kilimanjaro trekking Lemosho route is all about.

Starting on the remote western side of the mountain, this itinerary takes you through pristine rainforest filled with monkeys and birdsong, across the wide-open Shira Plateau with its endless views of Kibo, along dramatic glacial landscapes, up the thrilling Barranco Wall, and finally to the summit. The extra day compared to the 6-day version gives you even better acclimatization ,  meaning higher chances of reaching the top feeling strong and safe.

This route is widely considered one of the most scenic and enjoyable paths up Kilimanjaro. It starts quietly with very few other trekkers, then gradually joins the main trails near the end. Perfect for adventurers who want stunning variety, excellent acclimatization, and a real sense of wilderness.

Our Arusha-based guides know every inch of this route; they have led countless climbers safely to the summit while watching for weather changes, altitude symptoms, and the best photo spots. As locals who grew up under Kilimanjaro’s shadow, we’re deeply committed to responsible tourism: fair treatment and good conditions for our porters and crew, eco-friendly practices, and support for the national park’s conservation efforts.

Best time to climb ? June–October or December–February for drier trails and clearer summit views.

Itinerary

Day 1: Moshi/Arusha to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: ~1,800 m / 5,900 ft (Londorossi Gate area) to 2,900 m / 9,500 ft

Hiking Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~6 km | Difficulty: Low | Habitat: Rainforest

Your adventure begins with our team collecting you from your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. After a warm welcome and thorough gear check plus safety briefing, we drive about 3–4 hours to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side.

Permits sorted, we transfer deeper into the forest to the Lemosho trailhead. The first day’s walk is gentle and magical ,  winding through lush, undisturbed rainforest alive with birds, monkeys, and the rich scent of moss and leaves. Sunlight filters through the canopy as you make your way to Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Camp.

Our crew has tents ready, hot water for washing, and a hearty dinner waiting. Relax, breathe in the mountain air, and feel the excitement of what lies ahead.

Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 2,900 m / 9,500 ft to 3,500 m / 11,500 ft

Hiking Time: 5–6 hours | Distance: ~8 km | Difficulty: Medium | Habitat: Heath / Moorland

After breakfast, the trail climbs steadily out of the forest into a beautiful heath zone. Tall grasses sway, heather bushes glow with color, and volcanic rocks are draped in lichen. You’ll cross small streams and climb through rolling hills before reaching the edge of the Shira Ridge.

The descent to Shira 2 Camp is gentle, and suddenly the massive face of Kibo appears across the plateau ,  your first real look at the peak you’ll soon stand on. The vastness of the Shira Plateau feels like stepping onto another planet.

Arrive at camp, settle in, enjoy hot drinks, and watch the light fade over the mountain.

Accomodation Option:

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,500 m / 11,500 ft to 3,950 m / 13,000 ft (high point ~4,650 m at Lava Tower)

Hiking Time: 6–7 hours | Distance: ~10–12 km | Difficulty: Medium | Habitat: Semi-desert / Alpine

Today is one of the most important for acclimatization. We trek across the open Shira Plateau, then head toward the dramatic Lava Tower ,  a towering volcanic plug often called “Shark’s Tooth.”

We climb to around 4,650 m for lunch. You’ll feel the altitude, but this high point followed by a descent is exactly what your body needs. After a rest, we drop down into the beautiful Barranco Valley, passing giant senecios and lobelias.

Reaching Barranco Camp, the sheer Barranco Wall rises above you ,  it looks impressive, but our guides will reassure you it’s a fun scramble tomorrow. Relax with tea, watch the sunset paint Kibo in pink, and rest well.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why choose seven days over the shorter Lemosho option?

Seven days gives your body an extra day to acclimatize compared to the 6-day version, which generally improves comfort and summit success rates. It strikes a good balance between a manageable trip length and giving altitude enough time to adjust properly.

Do I need previous climbing experience?

No technical climbing experience is needed, since Lemosho is a trekking route rather than a technical ascent. What matters more is a reasonable level of fitness and determination, since the days are long and the final push to the summit is physically demanding.

What is included in the trek?

This typically includes park fees, camping equipment, meals during the trek, and a full team of guides and porters. We recommend confirming exact inclusions with us directly, since details can vary depending on the specific package.

When is the best time to climb Kilimanjaro via Lemosho?

The driest and most popular windows are typically January to mid March and June to October, when trails are clearer and weather is more predictable. Climbing outside these windows is still possible, though rain and cloud cover become more likely.

How does altitude sickness get managed on this route?

Our guides monitor trekkers daily for symptoms and follow a pace designed to support acclimatization across the seven day itinerary. If symptoms become serious, guides are trained to make the call to descend, since safety always comes first over reaching the summit.

Which camps are used along the 7-day Lemosho route?

A typical route passes through camps such as Mti Mkubwa, Shira, Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu before the final summit push, with a descent afterward. The extra day compared to the 6-day version is often added around the Barranco and Karanga area to help with acclimatization.

Will I be trekking with a group or privately?

Both options are available. Joining a scheduled group departure is usually more affordable, while a private trek gives you full control over pace and start dates, arranged just for your party.

What fitness level do I need before attempting this trek?

General fitness such as regular walking, hiking, or cardio training in the months before your trek makes a real difference. You do not need to be an athlete, but building stamina beforehand helps considerably, especially for summit night.
