6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb via Shira Route

kiwoito best operator of the year award

Tour Overview

Picture yourself stepping out onto the vast Shira Plateau on day one, wide-open moorlands stretching under Kilimanjaro’s massive dome, with distant glaciers catching the morning light and the African plains far below. That’s the thrill of the Shira Route, a high-altitude gem that skips the lower forest trek and dives straight into the mountain’s dramatic upper zones for stunning, less-crowded scenery.

This 6-day Kilimanjaro climb starts at Shira Gate (around 3,600m), quickly reaching the plateau where you’ll join elements of the Lemosho and Machame routes. You’ll cross the expansive Shira Plateau, climb to Lava Tower for acclimatization, scramble the Barranco Wall, circle the southern circuit, and summit via the classic Barafu ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341 ft). The route passes through moorland, alpine desert, rocky scree, and icy summit slopes, offering panoramic views from multiple angles.

Because of the high start, this route suits experienced, fit hikers who are comfortable with altitude from day one, it’s not ideal for beginners due to faster ascent and potential early altitude challenges. But for those ready, it delivers quicker access to remote beauty, fewer crowds in the early days, and a solid summit push with our careful pacing. No huts, just comfortable mountain tents, hot meals in our mess tent, and the constant support of your dedicated crew. Our Arusha-based guides know these high trails intimately, monitoring your health closely, adjusting pace, and sharing stories to keep you motivated and safe.

Best seasons: June–October and December–February for drier conditions and clearer vistas. If you’re an experienced trekker seeking a scenic, adventurous path with genuine Tanzanian warmth, this 6-day Shira Route Kilimanjaro climb is your fast track to the roof of Africa.

Itinerary

Day 1: Shira Gate – Shira 2 Camp

Your climb begins with a scenic 3-hour drive from Arusha (or Moshi) to Shira Gate for registration. After meeting your warm crew, our certified local guides, porters, and cook, you start hiking right into the upper montane forest and heath zones.

The trail winds up a ridge through misty trees and moorland, with possible muddy sections lower down (gaiters and poles help). The air turns crisp quickly as you gain altitude fast. After 4–5 hours and ~8 km, reach Shira 2 Camp (3,850m / 12,600 ft) on the edge of the vast Shira Plateau. Settle in with hot tea, dinner, and stunning first views of Kibo under the stars.

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Elevation: 1,830m to 3,850m

Distance: ~8 km

Hiking Time: 4–5 hours

Day 2: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Wake to tea at your tent and breakfast with plateau views. Trek east across the open Shira Plateau, passing ridges and volcanic features toward the dramatic Lava Tower (“Shark’s Tooth” at 4,650m / 15,250 ft).

Reach Lava Tower for lunch and photos amid swirling clouds, great for acclimatization. Then descend southeast into the breathtaking Great Barranco Valley: hanging glaciers, giant lobelias, steep walls. After 5–6 hours and ~10 km, arrive at Barranco Camp (4,000m / 13,000 ft) on a scenic shelf. End the day at similar elevation to start, but the high exposure helps your body adapt.

Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Start with the exciting Barranco Wall scramble, steep and thrilling with natural handholds and epic drop views (no technical gear needed). Crest the wall, then follow a steady ridge into Karanga Valley.

This shorter day (~3–4 hours, ~5 km) focuses on acclimatization and rest. Karanga Camp (4,050m / 13,250 ft) offers peaceful spots with summit glimpses. Hydrate well, enjoy dinner, and feel stronger for the push ahead.
