7 Days Kilimanjaro Trek via Shira Route

kiwoito best operator of the year award

Tour Overview

Imagine waking up on the vast Shira Plateau, standing above the clouds with Kilimanjaro’s massive dome glowing in the early light and the African plains stretching endlessly below. That’s the unique magic of the Shira Route, a high-altitude path that skips the long rainforest trek and drops you straight into the mountain’s dramatic upper landscapes.

This 7-day Kilimanjaro climb starts at Shira Gate (around 3,600m), quickly reaching the expansive Shira Plateau where you join elements of the Lemosho and Machame trails. You’ll cross the plateau, climb to Lava Tower for acclimatization, scramble the thrilling Barranco Wall, circle the southern circuit, and summit from Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341 ft). The route takes you through moorland, alpine desert, rocky scree, and icy summit slopes, offering sweeping panoramic views from multiple angles.

The extra day built into this 7-day version (staying at Karanga Camp) gives your body valuable time to adjust after the high start, significantly improving summit chances compared to the shorter 6-day Shira itinerary. This route is best suited for experienced, fit hikers who are comfortable with altitude from the first day. No huts, just comfortable mountain tents, hot meals prepared fresh in our mess tent, and the constant care of your dedicated crew. Our Arusha-based guides know these high trails inside out, they monitor your health closely, pace you perfectly, and share the mountain’s stories to keep you motivated and safe.

Best climbed June–October or December–February for drier trails and clearer skies. If you’re an experienced trekker looking for stunning plateau scenery, fewer crowds in the early days, and better acclimatization, this 7-day Shira Route Kilimanjaro climb is your ideal path to the roof of Africa.

Your climb begins with a scenic 3-hour drive from Arusha (or Moshi) to Shira Gate for registration. After meeting your warm, smiling crew, our certified local guides, porters, and cook, you start hiking right into the upper montane forest and heath zones.

The trail climbs steadily along a ridge through misty trees and moorland. The air turns crisp quickly as you gain altitude fast. After 4–5 hours and ~8 km, you reach Shira 2 Camp (3,850m / 12,600 ft) on the edge of the vast Shira Plateau. Settle into your tent with hot tea, a hearty dinner, and breathtaking first views of Kibo under the stars.

Reach Lava Tower around lunch for photos and a high-altitude break amid swirling clouds, perfect for acclimatization. Then descend southeast into the stunning Great Barranco Valley: hanging glaciers, giant lobelias, steep walls. This shorter day (~3–4 hours, ~5 km) is dedicated to rest and acclimatization. Karanga Camp (4,050m / 13,250 ft) offers peaceful spots with clear summit glimpses. Hydrate well, enjoy a hearty dinner, and feel your strength building for the higher camps.
